The esteemed scholars of Deoband conform to the dictates of Ahl as-Sunnah wa Al-Jama’ah by abiding to all its rules and principles that have been transmitted through an unbroken chain from one illustrious individual to another.
The name “Ahl as-Sunnah wa Al-Jama’ah” encompasses the Prophetic methodology with two fundamental components, Individuals and Shari’ah, which are the foundation of the scholars of Deoband. The word “Sunnah” refers to all the possible branches of religion that stem from the Prophetic way and are a part of the maslak of the scholars of Deoband. And “Jama’ah” is the essence of the maslak of Deoband by honouring, following, and having due regard for all the respected individuals who benefitted from the spiritual brilliance of the Prophet صلي الله عليه وسلم.
Balance, caution and moderation are its distinction by adhering to, with wisdom and moderation, to all of the branches of religion and principles of knowledge from the Quran and Hadith to Fiqh and Kalam.
Moderation in Monotheism (Tawhid) is the maslak of these esteemed scholars. They do not consider respecting and honouring people of merit as being contrary to monotheism.
The way of the Deoband scholars is to acknowledge the Prophets as individuals who were trustees of the Divine message, who conveyed it to the creation with perfect integrity, resolve and care, and are also recognized as teachers, educators and benefactors of the creation of Allah. Hence they are deserving of honour, dignity and respect.
Regarding the last and the best of them all, Prophet Muhammad صلي الله عليه وسلم is revered with the moderation and balance that has been taught by the Prophet himself. They firmly believe that he is unique and is the most superior of creation and at the same time, affirm him to be a human being. And they have a firm belief in him being the perfect slave.
These scholars adhere to the Hanafi madhhab, however, they respect and accept the other imams and their madhahib since all the imams were on truth. Their ideology regarding Fiqh is according to that of Mawlana Rashid Ahmad Gangohi who had diligently researched and mastered the intricacies of the field and expounded on it.
Their principles and ideology regarding the religion are according to that of Mawlana Muhammad Qasim Nanautwi who had expounded on the beliefs of the Ahl as-Sunnah wa Al-Jama’ah using logical and rational proofs and reconciled the differences between the Asha’ira and the Maturidiyya.
Their spirituality is based on Tasawwuf which conforms totally to the Shari’ah, comprising of purification of the soul, beautification of one’s character and establishing a connection with Allah Ta’ala.
