Sayyiduna Anas ibn Malik (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reported: The Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) said: None of you have Iman until I am more beloved to him than his children, his father, and all of the people.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

Believing in Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) is an integral part of our Aqeedah, and a defining characteristic of our identity as Muslims.

But how well do we really know the Beloved of Allah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam)?

In spite of the centrality of his teachings in our lives, we have a limited idea of who he was, what he stood for, what he taught, or how he reacted in variant circumstances.

The Sahaba (Radhiyallahu Anhum) were attracted to Islam because they were also attracted to Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam). They grew up with him, they knew everything about him, and because they knew him, they loved him, and gave up everything for the Deen, and modelled their lives on his.

If we aspire for correct love of the Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam), then we aught to know him better too. Once we come to know him better, we will love him more than our children, our mothers and fathers, our husbands and our wives. We will, Allah Willing, come to love him more than ourselves – and it will be then that we become true believers.
